The Importance of Receiving

In the book, The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann, they talk about the Five Laws of Stratospheric Success. The 5th law is the Law of Receptivity which states that the key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving. This is usually the most difficult of the 5 laws for most people to follow. Why? Because most of us learned limiting beliefs at an early age such as “it’s better to give than to receive.” Or “it’s selfish to receive.”

But it’s also difficult to receive if we are unable to openly ask for and receive support. How else can we achieve huge goals except by asking for help, enlisting assistance and collaborating with others.

If you are someone who learned at an early age never to:

  • be vulnerable
  • have needs that you can’t take care of yourself
  • ask for what you’d really like
  • rely on anyone else
  • allow yourself to feel your deepest needs,

you probably tend to try to do everything for yourself. Not counting on others protects you from being disappointed or feeling betrayed if they don’t come through for you.

When you decide you don’t need anything from others or the world, you block yourself from asking and receiving. If you have a vow to never be vulnerable or needy, instead you become guarded and closed. It’s nearly impossible to receive when you’re in this state.

The vow to not depend on anyone keeps you from receiving all the rewards in life that you want and deserve, despite how much you think you want it. From a Law of Attraction perspective, when you don’t allow yourself to have needs, you tell the universe, “I don’t need anything from anyone. I don’t need rewards for all that I do. I’m willing to work hard and be strong and to give and give and work and work, but I’m not comfortable receiving anything for it.”

In order to receive, you have to be open to it; you have to be willing to ask. So start by opening yourself up to one small thing at a time. It may feel awkward at first, but it will begin feeling great, especially when your wealth begins to grow!
