Travel Agent vs Travel Coach

When I mention to people that I’m a travel coach, they often confuse that with what a travel agent or advisor do.  That’s not so surprising since the term “travel coach” is relatively new.

So, what is the difference?

In a traditional travel agent (advisor) role, the traveler is typically asked such things as:

  • Where would you like to go?
  • How long would you like to stay?
  • How many of you are traveling?
  • Where have you traveled to in the past?
  • What kind of activities do you enjoy doing?
  • What is your budget?

These are some good questions for booking a trip but none of them really say much about WHY you want to travel and what you want to get out of your trip experience.

You research, plan, and book trips for a reason and those reasons usually change every time you travel.

For example, at one time you might be looking to spend some quality time with your family or a friend.  Another time you might want to get away to get clear on your thoughts about what’s going on in your life or to make a decision about your career or whether you want to stay in your current job.  And yet another time you might be healing from a life event – grieving, loss, burnout, trauma, heartbreak, or something else that has impacted you emotionally.

We know that travel can be a powerful tool for healing, transformation, connection, personal development, introspection, professional growth, and much more.  But this mostly happens when awareness and intention are brought to the surface.  These are the things that a travel coach helps you with.

So both a travel advisor and a travel coach can be very helpful but definitely serve different purposes.

If you’re experiencing a major life change such as a loss of a loved one, a career or job, kids leaving home, divorce, or anything else and are looking for a way to grieve or transform in some way, intentional traveling is an extremely powerful way to do that.
