I was a well-established psychotherapist who had been in practice for 27 years. I had a great practice and did fine with my income but there was a problem. You see, I sat back and allowed insurance companies to refer clients to me. I didn’t go out of my way to do more with my practice. I just passively sat back and let it all happen to me. I could have done so much more as a practitioner if I had been more active, more willing to take a risk rather than settling for the rates that insurance companies paid. If I had, I wouldn’t have had to work so hard, so many hours, to make a decent income. I would have charged more.
It was a real rude awakening when it came time to build my coaching business a few years ago. I didn’t know how to find clients and frankly, I was terrified of having to ask people to work with me even though I knew I could help them.
It was then that I knew that I had been operating out of a false sense of security. I kept myself playing small in my business and my life. I didn’t step into bigger things… And I wasn’t even aware that I had been doing that.
